Web-based mentorship: Earth Odysseys Morocco (3 credits)
Cross-listed with Middle Eastern & North African Studies (MENAS) 461
Offered FALL term
Meets Mon/Wed 2:30-4
Are you interested in using technology to engage in challenging conversations and to explore important questions about our world? If so, Education 261 is the course for you. As a student in Education 261, you’ll develop your skills as a facilitator of rich conversation while serving as a mentor to middle and high school student participants in the “Earth Odyssey Morocco” project. Being a mentor gives you a meaningful context in which to reflect upon what you value as a learner while you gain skills in crafting questions and in closely observing student writing so as to help younger people more fully develop their ideas, and to inquire thoughtfully into another country and culture while looking with fresh eyes at their own lives.
This web-based project is built around a series of reports that portray aspects of daily life in Morocco as seen by a UM alumna of Egyptian heritage who lived and taught in Morocco for three years. Our reporter writes about what she sees of gender issues, the place of religion in society, social mores, and more. Students worldwide read and respond to the reports, and you engage with the students, trying to probe and honor their thinking while encouraging a thoughtful orientation to our world. Come and join us!!
